without nik and feeling exposed

you see the little guy in the photo
out there, above water, totally exposed?

well, this week I'm without nik
and i'm feeling kind of naked

nik and i
have a thing going on
and without him
it's like forgetting to wear your watch
and once you realize it's not there
you feel naked
you know that feeling?

nik is at the spa this week
getting all pampered and stuff
he's been worked pretty hard
since i brought him home in january

he deserves a break
i guess
i certainly wouldn't want him breaking down on me or anything
because i was too selfish
not to think about his needs

any good relationship
is a give and take
so this week
i'm giving

One Word Wednesday ~ Enchanting

nothing can be much more
than relaxing on a boat
staring at the sky
 and in one direction
all you can see are magnificent hues
of pinks and oranges
rising above serene waters and silhouetted mountains
resulting from a setting sun
and then...
with a slight shift of vision
you can also watch a deepening blue sky
with a full moon
rising slowly
into the blackness of eternity

that is truly enchanting!

please join in
and share your thoughts on this week's word....

A Matter of Perspective

                                                                                          clemson university student center

in college
you want out
out of college
you want back in

this past weekend we went to Clemson
to buy their blue cheese (heavenly)
and have some of their ice cream (also heavenly)

while eating the ice cream
we sat outside
and all i could think of were my college days (not at this school)
and how, sometimes, i wish i could go back and re-live them
never fully grasping at the time
how much of an impression they would leave
and what a special time it was

on my own
looking out for myself
making my own decisions
without anyone questioning them
being responsible for myself

planting roots for friendships
that would last for years to come
even when we don't see each other
but picking up the phone
and chatting like it was yesterday

education now seems secondary

it was the lessons in life
that got firmly planted

what lasting impressions do you have from your school days?

Jillsy's Kitchen ~ This Little Piggy went to Breakfast

if you're anything like me
i get tired of the same old bacon and eggs
whenever i actually do have a breakfast

so last weekend i opened my fridge
grabbed some Smart Balance
(since we're trying to stay away from too much butter)
salsa, swiss cheese, eggs and english muffins
and ended up creating a breakfast masterpiece
all within less than 10 minutes

Cheesy Salsa Egg Sandwich
(for two sandwiches)

melt the butter (doesn't show in photo)
crack two eggs on the side of the pan (threw away the shells)

pour in some salsa

throw in some swiss cheese

 a little pepper

mix it all up til the eggs are scrambled and the cheese is nice and gooey

toast two english muffins

and yum!

(I just made them again this morning for my brother and sister-in-law who have been visiting and they wolfed them down!)

Hints of Autumn

as i stepped onto our boat
i spotted this leaf floating in the narrow channel between the dock and our boat
the sun catching the autumn colors
illuminating it against the deep green of the lake
autumn is arriving
the temperatures don't tell me so
but little hints such as this leaf in an unexpected spot
longer shadows
less humidity
bluer skies
cooler mornings
all lead to the imminent end of summer
and the shift to another season
full of its own beauty

The foliage has been losing its freshness through the month of August
and here and there a yellow leaf shows itself like the first gray hair
amidst the locks of a beauty who has seen one season too many.

One Word Wednesday ~ Crisp

even though i chose the word
"crisp" ended up being quite a challenge for me
as i said last week
it just popped out of my head with no forethought

when i began thinking about the word "crisp"
i thought of several things, such as...
 men in shirt and ties
the air on a cold sunny morning
but the word also brought to mind
the crispness of high contrast and geometric shapes
and that's when i spotted the above
as i walked through my home

how do you picture or explain the word "crisp"?

share your idea below by linking up with your own post!

so get your thinking caps on
for the word...

It came out of nowhere and hit me like a ton of bricks....

she's now a woman of fifty
but her youthfulness still shines through

we know her as baby
but her real name is jennifer

she's a contestant
on dancing with the stars

call me dorky
but my parents were ballroom dance teachers
so i guess it's in my blood

i watch the show
 and enjoy it immensely

when someone begins with two left feet and a lack of confidence
can blossom into a graceful dancer
because of commitment and hard work
it's an achievement i can appreciate

she lifted her elbows
looked up into his eyes
and that's when it hit me

her hair the same tousled bob
him towering above her
young and handsome

my heart jerked
tears swelled

memories rushing

it should have been patrick
but it was derek

they should have been
dirty dancing

A Blog Worthy of Note

a blog friend
actually, he no longer has a blog
but still drops in from time to time to say hi
introduced me to a new blog
new for me, that is
and i think it is worthy to pass it on to others
his name is James Dunn
and he has just left his homeland of England
to live in India for three months
he is sharing his adventures through his blog
and has a wonderful writing style
coupled with great photography
even if you don't have room to add another blog to your already long lists
i highly suggest you try and squeeze James' in!

there are two other posts from yesterday as well

Let the Winds Fill Your Sails.....

“There's no thrill in easy sailing when the skies are clear and blue,
there's no joy in merely doing things which any one can do.
But there is some satisfaction that is mighty sweet to take,
when you reach a destination that you never thought you'd make”
                                                                                author unknown

 ~ have a good weekend everyone ~

because of Hilary's comment, i thought i should also post the colored image
because the mountains are actually shades of blue ~ hence the Blue Ridge Mountains
not sure why they cause this phenomenon, but they really do look blue from a distance
this image is straight out of the camera

leaving our marina this afternoon
i stopped to admire this scene

it reflected our afternoon on the lake perfectly

Galg and Mlum

let me introduce you...
galg and mlum

yes, you heard me right
galg is on the right
and mlum is on the left

cute ~ aren't they?

okay, you think i've fallen off my rocker, don't you?

alright, those birds aren't really galg and mlum
they're just a couple of old crows
in our backyard

galg is my older brother
at least that's what i called him when i was a toddler
his real name doesn't even come close
but for whatever reason
is what came out of my mouth
actually, it started out as gaggy
then got shortened to gag
and somehow, over the years, it morphed into galg
the name that stuck
in fact
it feels somewhat awkward to this day to call him by is real name
therefore; most times i avoid calling him by name at all
but on those occasions when i need to call him something, i'll cough out his real name
because galg is pretty silly

mlum is another fascinating concoction of letters
how i came up with it is beyond me
for in no stretch of the imagination does it come close to
go figure!

do you have any strange made up words from your childhood?

One Word Wednesday

i need a challenge
not that i don't have a big enough challenge already ~ my new endeavor
yes, it's coming
unfortunately, later than sooner
much more work than i anticipated
but it's getting there

but back to the other challenge
i like challenges
they keep me on my toes
so i've decided to challenge myself
and if you also enjoy challenges
i'd love for you to join me

call it my weekly word challenge
and to make things fair
i'll mix it up from week to week
some weeks i'll pick the word
and on others i'll give the honor to one of you
that's because this is an equal opportunity blog

this week i already picked one
only because if i waited until now to pick it
i wouldn't have a photo to give you
oh wait, i haven't yet told you about what we'll be doing with that word

here's how it will go down...

we'll call it
  one word wednesday
just because it sounds cute
 so wednesday it is
then, depending on your personal preference
you can depict that word in any way you like
as in...
one photo
one mosaic
one drawing
one cartoon
one paragraph (if you like to write)
one poem
or one of anything you so desire

mine will, of course, be a photo

the word i chose for this week
don't worry ~ i only chose it yesterday

a u t u m n

i know
 it's pretty easy
but i don't want to scare anyone off the first week
you have the next six days to come up with your own post depicting what autumn is to you
and link up below

here's what autumn means to me in mid september in atlanta...

 hold on...
where do you think you're going
there's more!
i'm going to also give you next week's word
so we can all think about it for next wednesday
let me go grab a word from my noggin
hold on a sec, i feel one coming
here it is....

c r i s p

now off you go with your two words this week
one to post about in the next few days and one to think about for next wednesday's post

hope to see you link up!

have fun!

Jillsy's Kitchen ~ Yorkshire Pudding

having married an Englishman
i have been introduced to several English dishes
that i truly enjoy
totally contrary to the common American belief that all English food sucks

this dish, in particular, is probably my fave
i could have it for an entire meal
although, it is normally served as a first course
forget the roast beef...
bring on the yorkshire puds!!

yorkshire puddings are not puddings
they are similar to popovers
(i have never had one, but i have read so)

as a first course, we usually have them with a brown mushroom gravy
but when we have them for a meal we will make a stew and pour servings into the pudding.

unfortunately, i have yet to find
 even on the internet
a store that sells yorkshire pudding tins in the States
we purchased ours in England

they come in various sizes
as seen here

but you could use a large muffin tin
or any tin that has a slightly angled side to it
you could even use a large rectangular tin and then cut the pudding up for individual servings

but, one thing you need to know is that making yorkshire puddings is an art
an art that can only be perfected with practice

altitude definitely has something to do with the outcome
along with
 the oven
the flour
and even the tins themselves (the more used, the better)
each of the above plays an important role

the recipe is simple
it's how all the other elements work together
that makes the difference between a fluffy yorkshire pudding and a flying saucer
but even flying saucers taste good!

Holding On To Summer

yes, this is a re-post from friday
only because i was informed this morning about
mosaic mondays and wanted to join in!

our butterfly bush
is reaching the end of its season
but still attracts daily customers
to feast upon its last flowers

this black swallowtail
was an delight to watch

he wouldn't stop fluttering
and depending on how the light was hitting
the orange and blue on his under wings
 got electrified

the butterfly
counts not months
but moments,
and has time enough.

Rabindranath Tagore

what are your last signs of summer?

join me at mary's little red house for mosaic monday

Funky Creature Sighting #3

well, folks
i've had yet another sighting
this time i didn't realize it until i saw it enlarged on my monitor
i shot it with a zoom lens and assumed it was a large bee
but eeks...that doesn't look like the average bee to me
unfortunately, the photos are not crisp, but i think you can get the idea

what do you think?
VM we need your expertise
do you happen to know what it could be?
this sighting was in our backyard in Atlanta

you can look HERE & HERE at my other two previous sightings

JAL @ Cricket Eye's View led me to identify this funky creature
as the Snowberry Clearwing Moth
Thanks JAL!!

any end of summer tasks on your list?

i remember it like it was yesterday
