Funky Do

Next to the hummingbird, this beautiful, big daddy of woodpeckers with its funky do comes in a close second on my favorite bird list, and whenever I see one my heart does a little jig.  Sorry the photos are not crisp, he was higher up in the tree than the power of my zoom could handle, but at least I was able to capture him.

The very first time I ever saw one was inside my living room.  It was sitting on one of the window sills (on the outside), and I was in awe!  It was an adult, and I was taken aback by its beauty.  Unfortunately, back then I was not into photography, but the image will be forever ingrained in my memory.

Mr. Pileated Woodpecker.....(I believe he is a juvenile because I've seen much larger ones)

Fab Friday!

Recipients ~ fee free to grab the badge!

another week passes so quickly
i have to wonder where it went
scary sometimes
when you stop and think about it

this week the parties weren't quite as active as normal
and i have to partially blame myself for that
a party hostess must stay attentive at all times
which i admit i've faltered with a bit
but i also know that august has its annual demands
that keep us all scurrying about with other things
and since we are in the midst of the Dog Days of Summer
even our pets haven't been very active
which was the theme at Party Random
maybe not the best timing for that theme

but even so
there were still a few
partyers that made a hit
even though the party itself was a bit sluggish
party animals don't pay attention to lack of attendance
they have the uncanny ability to have fun and get noticed
no matter if they're the only ones in the room!

clicking the actual image will take you directly to the original Flickr page

the theme was Hummingbirds
take a look at these babies!

Hummingbird in hand
was all about showing only a tidbit of themselves
and making the others figure out what they were

Can you guess what this is?  I couldn't.

By George, I finally got one!

Just last week
I commented on someone's post saying
I never had any luck capturing a hawk inside the box
and then....
only a couple of days later
I was talking on the phone on our back patio
and caught sight of one of our local hawks swooping through our yard and landing on a tree branch
this, in itself, is not unusual
it's just the lucky opportunity of having:

1. the hawk land within eyesight
2.  the hawk land close enough for my zoom lens to capture any clarity
3.  the luck of having my camera close enough to start shooting before the bird flies off again

I've just never had the good fortune of having all three elements lining up together
that is, until that afternoon

I abruptly ended my telephone conversation
ran inside and grabbed my camera
thinking to myself, he'll be gone when I get back outside
but to my delight was still sitting on the same tree branch I had sighted him on
which was a distance from our patio

I walked as slowly and as quietly as I could
to our garden shed which would be the only obstruction
between he and I
I got to the shed and peeked around the side
and there he sat quietly

beautiful, isn't he?

then I crept a bit closer, trying my hardest not to make a sound
still no notice of me

then he looked around
but was still unaware of me
so I continued to take lots of shots
not knowing what would turn out

after a good five minutes or so
he finally noticed me

and then the shouting started
which scared the begeebees out of me
since everything had been so quiet
and I was THAT close to him!

here's what it sounded like
turn the volume  up to imagine what I heard right beneath him!

when he didn't stop ~ that's when I decided I better scram!

I know what those talons are capable of!

Yes, YOU!

now that i have your attention...

would you like to be visited by the Fairy Hobmother?

i can't guarantee your toad will turn into a prince
but you might just get a wish granted
like i did

yes, a wish, which was really just a desire, was granted while i was on vacation!

in this post way back in May
i had mentioned something about wanting a gorillapod
and somehow the Fairy Hobmother found out about that post
and granted me that wish!

now how cool is that!

all you have to do is leave a comment on this post
and she just might leave you a little something under your pillow, too!

it might be a good idea to leave a hint as to what you might like
since I'm not really sure how she operates!

and on a sidenote....
the texture i used on the above image
(which i must add was graciously offered as a freebie)
comes from the talented Bonnie over at Pixel Dust Photo Art
this one is called "Silent Memory"
if you love playing with textures, stop by her digs to say hi and tell her i sent you!

The Cardinal Rule

walking through my kitchen
i glanced outside the large picture window
and saw something dead still on the bird feeder

i walked closer to the window to see what it was
and realized it was a baby bird
(later identified as a cardinal)
but oddly
it wasn't pecking at the food
it wasn't doing anything
no hint of movement
at all

i walked outside onto our deck
to get a little closer
still no movement

i ran in the house and went downstairs to grab my camera
came back and
 still no movement

first photo from the deck
second photo from garden path ~ still no movement
now right up under the bird feeder ~ still no movement ~ eyes tight shut ~ notice the tail feathers in all photos ~ no change

mind you....approximately 10 minutes has now elapsed with no movement
i was getting a bit concerned
do birds fall asleep on feeders, i asked myself?
dead birds wouldn't be perched
so, what the heck was it doing?
i kept clicking away but nothing stirred the little one
then hubby came out on the deck to see what was going on
i motioned for him to come down and check it out
he walked all around the bird feeder which hangs about 6 ft. off the ground from a tree limb
and finally it opened its eyes
probably from the crunching of some leaves as hubby stepped

finally ~ a show of life!
but looking a bit dazed and confused

finally ~ acknowledgement of my clicking

i decided to walk to the other side of the feeder
and  that's when it finally decided to take flight
although, quite amateurishly, i must say
it first landed on top of the deck umbrella
my heart skipped a beat or two because i wasn't sure she'd make it
i watched her get her composure and bearings back
and then she was off again
on another haphazard flight
up to the rooftop
again my heart flipped a couple of times

one look this way

and one that way
and then she hopped further back on the roof until she was gone from sight

my immediate thought was
not good

an easy meal

i just hope that didn't happen

hubby found the little one on our patio just a little while ago and it had died, probably from starvation.
