Standing Guard

i've only seen these amazing masked bandits
on other blogs
but never before in my backyard
that is,
until this weekend
::
i was totally taken aback
the second i walked out the back door
onto our deck
::
i don't know who
was more surprised
ME
 or the flock of 15-20 cedar waxwings
that flew out of the holly bushes
 surrounding the deck

Standing Guard ~ these masked bandits take their jobs very seriously ~ available on Red Bubble
 ::
up they scattered
into nearby shrubbery and trees
 causing interruption to their meal
::
BERRIES
l o t s    o f    t h e m
 ripe for the picking

i happened to capture this little stinker taking care of business, so there's been some cloning done on this one!
 ::
50 yard dash
back inside
::
camera
::
grab

did i hear you say that you were thinking of leaving me?
::
i felt so privileged
they decided to dine and hang
at our B&B
this year

Don King wannabe
 ::
 but, it won't surprise me
if they're all gone tomorrow
::
to wherever
their annual journey
takes them
::
unfortunately,
it's not here in
Georgia

  4. What wonderful photos of cedar wax wings. Love the first one with bokeh in the background and birds perched sleek and elegant on branches, but the Don King reference made me laugh.

    1. Ooh...I love your animated avatar! I need to do a little research, but if you noticed, some of them have a little red dot on their wing (that is not a photoshop addition) and i wonder if it is only because I couldn't see it on all of them, or if it's a marking of a male.

  11. Oh wow! I can't believe that you've captured all of these images! They are so beautiful...I LOVE cedar waxwings, but I rarely see them. Sometimes they visit the juniper shrub I prevented my husband from tearing out with the other overgrown junipers. I wanted to save one just in case the cedar waxwings decided to stop by. Again...I'm amazed at the wonderful images you've captured during this brief visit!

  21. Beautiful captures, Jillsy. I'd never seen more than one Cedar waxwing at a time.. and rarely at that. Until yesterday, that is. While walking, we looked up to see a flock of them in the tree above us. Wrong lens, of course. ;) I'm happy to see yours.

  23. Your Don King” wannabe cracked me up, and all of your bird shot blew my mind. You must have thought you were in Heaven. Your captures are awesome, and the birds themselves are beautiful. Maybe one of these days I will lawn to take shots of birds that look as fine as yours. genie
